My Fun Packed Day

On Saturday after my Danone Nations Cup tryouts (which you will see a post about below) I went swimming in the morning. After that I had a delicious buffet breakfast. Later on we went to the Bug Zoo. A man there told us about all the different kinds of bugs. I got to hold many of the bugs like stick bugs (they are really awesome). The man even let me put a millipede on my face! There was also an ant farm in the Bug Zoo. Did you know one types of flies only lives two hours so it doesn’t even have a mouth because there is no point in eating if you only live for two hours. I also went to an aquarium called Undersea Gardens. We got there just in time to catch a presentation of a diver bringing an Octopus out of the back of the aquarium. He also bought out an ugly looking, 8 foot long Wolf Eel. In the other side of the aquarium there were tons of other types of fish and starfish. When we finished looking at all the cool fish we went to the Royal London Wax Museum. It was amazing. There was sculptures of pretty much every famous person ever. The sculptures looked so unbelievably real I just about talked to one thinking he was alive. To top the day off we went to Rogers Chocolates and had dessert. It was delicious.

Tell me about your weekend!

The Danone Nations Cup

Last week, on Friday, I went to a soccer tryout. The tryout was for the provincial team. It was held in Victoria. If anyone is wondering what Danone means here’s your answer. Danone is a yogurt company that makes all different types of yogurt. At the tryouts there was a mascot and everything. I played my best and did very well. It was extremely exciting. The whole thing was sponsored by Zenedine Zidane. He is a french soccer pro who is know retired.

If anyone else has recently had a soccer tryout or anything they want to tell me about please leave a comment.

Kicking a Soccer Ball

Hey Guys, today I am going to teach you the basics on how to kick a soccer ball. Here are the steps:

  1. Place your non-kicking foot on a diagonal line behind the ball (not TOO far away from the ball)
  2. When you kick, kick with the laces of your cleat (get your foot underneath the ball)
  3. Get your body bended over the ball (this way the ball won’t go flying out of control)
  4. And finally, strike the ball with your cleat and follow through with your shot. Score!

Another good way to kick the ball is putting a curl on it. Which makes it much harder for the Goalkeeper to save. Putting a curl on your shot is quite a bit more tricky but I will teach you anyway. It is pretty much the same steps as normally kicking the ball except when you strike the ball you have to move your leg in the other direction at the last moment of contact with the ball. Also when you run up to the ball you want to run up at it with even more of an angle.

Try out these tips and let me know how you did.

Bye! More tips coming soon. Photo by: Paul-W

The Bicycle Kick

Hey Guys

This time I am going to teach you how to do a bicycle kick. A bicycle kick is much harder then curling the ball. It involves more skill and practice to get it just right. Here are the steps:

  1. Timing is everything so be patient before you attempt the bicycle kick
  2. When the ball comes in the air wait for it to be just above your head
  3. Then leap off both feet (leaning back of course) and swing your non kicking foot in the air towards your head for momentum
  4. To finish it off fall backwards while striking the ball with power (strike the ball with your non kicking foot of course).

Try this out and let me know how you did!

The results so far for the “your favourite sport survey” is: soccer-11, swimming-8, football-5, basketball- 5, hockey-3, badminton-3, horseback riding-2, volleyball- 1 and tennis-1. Wow! I will update the results every time someone sends me a comment telling me what their favourite sport is so if you want your favourite sport to win this survey comment, comment, comment!

Dreams of Remembrance

On Remembrance Day our class did an assignment where we had to draw a watercolour picture of someone dreaming of either Flanders Fields or life in the war. I chose this picture to draw because the man who worked in the army (shown in the bottom of the picture) is remembering his friends’ gravestones in Flanders Fields. Many other soldiers died in the war! It was a terrible time for everyone. Unfortunately we are still involved in a war right now in Afghanistan.

Your Favourite Sport!

I am holding a survey to see what the average favourite sport is. I know my favourite sport is soccer. But if you want to take part in the survey leave a comment and let me know what your favourite sport is! After the survey is finished and enough people have left comments you can visit my blog and see what sport was the most popular.

Remembrance Day

Here in Canada we celebrate Remembrance Day. We celebrate it on November 11th. Remembrance Day is held in memory of the Canadian soldiers who died during the war. In class we are writing stories and poems about Remembrance Day. We learned about when the soldiers fought in trenches over no mans land. Our teacher read us a book about life in the trenches. It sounded terrible and made me feel even more in debt to those who fought for our country. The book told us about things like “trench foot”. It is what soldiers would get from having their feet in the water of the trenches for too long. The book also told us about how the soldier would eventually have to leave their trenches and go into no mans land to fight. There would be a very good chance of getting shot. They had to go out though because if they didn’t their punishment from higher commands would be death! The soldiers would also miss their families because some wars like World War 2 can go on for 6 years.

What are your feelings about the war? Leave a comment.

Halloween Night!

On Halloween Night (Friday) me and my friends went Trick-or-Treating around our neighbourhood. We started our Trick-or-Treating early (5 o’clock) at my friends house. Then eventually we made our way down to my house. We finished at 9. Since we had so long we had a lot of candy. I had 5 huge chocolate bars and over a hundred mini chocolate bars. For Halloween I was going to be dressed up as a soccer player but then I thought to my self… that’s just like going Trick-or-Treating as me. So I finally decided to be a punk rocker. It was a pretty weird costume but I thought it was awesome!

What did you dress up as for Halloween?
