Pivot Man Break Dancing

One fun thing we did in class today was make a pivot animation. The funnest part was making the elephant push the guy of the screen. The hardest part was adding music. In the end I was really satisfied with my video. Take a look!

People and Space!

Have you ever talked to a real astronaut? Our class has! This morning our class took part in a web cast with an astronaut who had been on the International Space Station for 5 months. His name is Clay Anderson. A “web cast” is where you can see the person you are communicating with and hear him at the same time.

I was  one of the students selected to ask a question during the web cast. My question was about the water they drink in space. I did research on the topic before I asked the question and I figured out that water in space is actually the astronauts sweat and urine. Yuck! I know that would be a definite first reaction but if you think about it what other choice do they have? It’s really not that bad though because the sweat and urine is purified into real water, but just the idea of drinking something that used to be your urine would gross me out. Did you know they even use the lab rats sweat and urine! They can’t keep water in a space shuttle to supply quite a few astronauts for a whole 5 months. Not to mention having to control the water in zero gravity.

Astronauts have to use special equipment in space. They have to eat their food out of special bags. The have to put spouts on their drinks and they have to have a lid on pretty much everything. Imagine having to worry about everything flying around everywhere.

The astronaut told us about how they had to exercise for almost 2 hours. The reason for it is that when you are in space you weigh nothing therefore your muscles don’t have to work. When you are on earth your muscles have to hold you up. So if the astronauts didn’t exercise while in space when they got back to earth their muscles would be to soft to hold them up. Especially if you are in space for 5 months!

Imagine being in space for 5 months without ever seeing your family or friends. When we talked to Clay Anderson he told us about how he would host a trivia game with the ground team to pass the time. He would also pretend he was super man flying around in the ship since there was no gravity. Not a typical astronaut!

Dreams of Remembrance

On Remembrance Day our class did an assignment where we had to draw a watercolour picture of someone dreaming of either Flanders Fields or life in the war. I chose this picture to draw because the man who worked in the army (shown in the bottom of the picture) is remembering his friends’ gravestones in Flanders Fields. Many other soldiers died in the war! It was a terrible time for everyone. Unfortunately we are still involved in a war right now in Afghanistan.

Halloween Safety Skits

During school on the day of Halloween our class performed some skits for the Kindergarten to Grade 4’s. It was really funny because in a lot of the skits our class added humour. I was the introducer. Which means I had the script that explained about what we were going to perform. When it was almost time for me to begin my speech my stomach had butterflies. I was very nervous. But, the moment I began to speak I wasn’t nervous anymore. And in the end I think I did a very good job. Our whole class performed incredibly. I think those kids will be safe for Halloween!

Halloween at School!

Did you ever think Halloween could be super fun at school? I didn’t…. until I went to school on Halloween day! In the morning everyone was in their awesome costumes. Our principal came through the door. He was dressed up as a Gorilla. It was a full Gorilla body suit and was it ever hilarious. He went through the classroom making funny Gorilla noises. After the principal did a funny walk to leave the classroom, the whole school got into a single file line and did a parade in their costumes so everyone got to see all the costumes. After the parade was finished our class performed our safety skits (which is explained in my other post). Then finally it was time for the afternoon Halloween activities. Here are all the activities:

  1. Bowling for ghosts- Bowling for ghosts is a game where one person throughs a ball and tries to knock down as many of the five ghost bowling pins as they can.
  2. The Secret Door- The Secret Door is a board game where you try and find matches of pairs of cards while they are turned upside down. It is a memory game.
  3. Halloween Bingo- Halloween Bingo is just like any other bingo except the bingo squares are Halloween theme and Rocket candies are used for markers.
  4. Halloween Computer Games- Halloween Computer Games are played on the computers. There was games such as Halloween Hangman and Soccer Shoot (which I really have no idea what Soccer Shoot has to do with Halloween).
  5. Halloween Drawings- To do Halloween Drawings a piece of paper is given to you and there is a book in front of you with instructions on how to draw some Halloween characters.

This Halloween at school was as you can probably tell… Awesome!

My Water Wise PSA

In class we had an assignment and this is my Water Wise public service announcement. We made these videos to promote being water wise. It was a lot of work but I hope it was worth it and it will give people a message to use less water.

The Comox Valley Regional District workers came to our class to give out some prizes for the winners and to watch the videos. The whole experience was very fun. I learned a lot!

Immunization (Shot) Day

5,4,3,2,1….. and the nurses sitting on both sides of me pulled the needles out of me. For a minute I wondered what was going on. Then I realized they had put the needle into me on five and pulled it out of me on one but I didn’t feel it. What I learned today is shots don’t hurt they only hurt a little bit after they come out. So if you ever have to get a shot and you are worried about take it from me and don’t worry about it at all.

My Camp Experience

Have you ever walked across a super thin log 40 feet in the air? I have!

We were on our way to our first activity of the day. High Ropes. I was close to the last person to have a turn and no one had ever tried to walk across the log. Therefore I thought I shouild be the first one to try it. So I climbed up the cargo net and went onto the 8m long log and attempted walking all the way across it. As I walked across my heart was beating faster than ever. It was exciting. My feet were shaking which made it even harder to get across! Everyone looked like ants as I looked down. Finally, I made it all the way across the log!
