Have you ever talked to a real astronaut? Our class has! This morning our class took part in a web cast with an astronaut who had been on the International Space Station for 5 months. His name is Clay Anderson. A “web cast” is where you can see the person you are communicating with and hear him at the same time.
I was one of the students selected to ask a question during the web cast. My question was about the water they drink in space. I did research on the topic before I asked the question and I figured out that water in space is actually the astronauts sweat and urine. Yuck! I know that would be a definite first reaction but if you think about it what other choice do they have? It’s really not that bad though because the sweat and urine is purified into real water, but just the idea of drinking something that used to be your urine would gross me out. Did you know they even use the lab rats sweat and urine! They can’t keep water in a space shuttle to supply quite a few astronauts for a whole 5 months. Not to mention having to control the water in zero gravity.
Astronauts have to use special equipment in space. They have to eat their food out of special bags. The have to put spouts on their drinks and they have to have a lid on pretty much everything. Imagine having to worry about everything flying around everywhere.
The astronaut told us about how they had to exercise for almost 2 hours. The reason for it is that when you are in space you weigh nothing therefore your muscles don’t have to work. When you are on earth your muscles have to hold you up. So if the astronauts didn’t exercise while in space when they got back to earth their muscles would be to soft to hold them up. Especially if you are in space for 5 months!
Imagine being in space for 5 months without ever seeing your family or friends. When we talked to Clay Anderson he told us about how he would host a trivia game with the ground team to pass the time. He would also pretend he was super man flying around in the ship since there was no gravity. Not a typical astronaut!
